Someone recently asked me what's the deal with the car free days on ur blog. A friend of mine shared with me this web-a-site: http://www.carfreedays.com/. The site has plenty-o literature to read, but the nutshell is if we try and reduce our carbon dependency we can work as individuals to help create a paradyme shift in what the collective "we" depend on for our transportation. At Car Free Days dot com you pledge how many days a month you will leave your vehicle parked and use alternative transportation - the minimum is (4) days. Since I have two kids, and know things always pop up, I pledged (5) car less days a month. So, if I don't drive for the day, I can count the bike miles I did in my running total. I ride almost everyday, however I also drive a bit during those days too - so I don't count my bike mileage on days I drive. My bike mileage comes from taking the kid to school, running errands, taking the other kid for a nap in the bike trailer, taking the dog for a run, etc.
It is quite liberating to evaluate your life in terms of putting a side something you "think" you depend on. I encourage anyone else remotely interested in healthier life alternatives to visit www.carfreedays.com.
