Thursday

So today's Thursday, 2:04pm, the cure is streaming, PBR is cold and the legs are throbbing - nice mid day commute break.

The boy and I biked to his school this morning (litttle 6 yr old stud w/ his messenger bag loaded with this weeks class asignments and lunch). I then shot over to work - yup, got a job a few weeks ago. I'm working with a great guy who helps all us cyclists buy good shit at a good price - check him out at www.milewidesports.com - who knows, if you buy something - I might've shipped it to you! Then I swung over to get the girl - my daughter - from her school. She's a little bad ass - sporting the Elmo jumpsuit and a winter tuk (pronounced too' k). Pulling her, my work shit, a 30 pk of Tecate (for tonight's John Butler Trio show), the Burley, the Tag-Along and the sweet night ride last night with Night Train - I'm worked!

Happy Riding! And check out our clan http://redrockracing.blogspot.com/. Take the cure quiz too!

How insane ideas are spawned Pt. 2

ROGER: I'll tell you what's new, Train. On the back of a five-hour off roader this weekend, and the realization that the Tahoe race is apparently only 93 miles long I've signed up. Yes that's $150 I've paid for something that is likely to cause me nothing but extreme pain and humiliation. Why I don't just kit Mrs Roger out with some whips and leather instead, I'll never know. Anyway it's done, I intend to be there. Will I make it? It's currently to close to call. So will I get some company? Come on gents you know you're all ultra endurance racers at heart.

NIGHT TRAIN: As for the news, it's not quite what I expected. I'm not sure what I was expecting. What are you expecting?

Roger: Oh yes, I suspect you're referring to kid number two. Such a trivial matter slipped my mind. Indeed, the wife's gone and got herself banged up again. A girl's due sometime in Oct. Hasn't really hit home yet, I think my minds refusing to accept that I've chosen to go through it all again. Could be fun I guess. Although it will probably end my promising enduro career before it's even up and running.

CRASH: WHAT? Your wife goes and gets banged up some three months ago and word finally comes out!? WAIT! February... weren't you f&%king around in Tucson for the weekend on your two wheeled lover? Ah, I see it all too clearly now: it's not your spawn - thank god, last thing we need is another pomme (sp?) american wondering around the Gay area butchering the English we on this side of the pond have come to love! Hopefully she got it right and went with another I-talian. Cheers on the baby girl!!!! A weird coincidence that we three have a boy first and girl second - hmm - weird.

oh and i've registered too.

Commuter files Report #3 - Bike to Work Week

Wilkens Bike Train Shuttle Service takes home first place (micro category) in this year's Bike to Work Week festivities - http://www.flagstaffbiking.org/! The kids and I racked up 186 total miles: in actual I rode 84miles, Kyra did 60miles - she sat in the trailer for that many miles (she's 2.5 yrs old ;)~, and Kyler pedalled 42miles (nice work - he's only five years old!)

untitled

Here is another reason why I like and respect David Zabriskie http://www.yieldtolife.org/ - I'm gonna bring Y2L to Flagstaff! I'd also like to send my sincere thoughts to Dave, Randi and his little one to be while he heals from the Giro: http://www.velonews.com/article/76096/zabriskie-crashes-out-of-giro and sincere thoughts to the rest of the Slipstream as well.

Great to see so many bikes out there today for B2WW - way to brave the 40mph wind, my legs are throbbing... ahh, New Belgium.

How insane ideas are spawned

Ok, I have slacked on my racing updates - I will just say things are great! Did the Whiskey 50 with exTour De France Floyd Landis winner (and was only 1hr 50min behind) and Gallup's Dawn to Dusk with Travis Brown (only 4 laps shorter ;)~

But here is something I really want to share with the 2 people who read my site. There are friends that encourage us to, as some people refer to it, achieve our very best. My friends however, continually desire to encourage us to achieve (or at least attempt) the insane - and I love them for it. What follows is a series of communications between said friends on the topic of the Tahoe Sierra 100 http://globalbiorhythmevents.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=32t (best read in a Spinal Tap frame of mind):

CRASH: just b/c I know: saying i'm into doing 100m and actually riding a 100m can be two completely different things, does anyone have any good training advice (besided ride a lot between now and then)?

ROGER: To be absolutely sure of nailing it. I think you should be looking to put in a couple of 200 mile offroad rides before the end of May. Then ramp it up. The real event will then feel like a stroll in the park.More seriously, no I don't know the golden rules for training for this. I 'd like to think I'll have an eight hour ride or two in the legs before race day. Whether I will is another matter. I also read somewhere not to neglect the value of long boring hours on the tarmac. Doesn't beat you up so much, but does condition the legs to turning for ridiculous lengths of time. If come August I can't ride 50 miles off road and still feel like I could service the female needs of the Bay Area, then you won't be seeing me anywhere except the bar to wish you well.Bottom line. Be prepared for all sorts of anti-bike invective from unhappy wives.

BANDITO: This is what I heard. If any of us are to have a realistic chance of doing this and having fun while doing it, wait just doing it and finishing. I heard we need 4-6years of base miles equivalent to a pro, coupled with a drug of choice. Now if you want to be competitive it helps to have been a winner of the Tour at some point in your career. Now since none of us qualify under these 2 simple qualification (except for maybe when we all are well on our way through our 3rd pitcher of beer) we may have to go back to the drawing board. This means I think Graham said it best, "be prepared for all sorts of anti-bike invective from unhappy wives". Now at the moment I may have this to my advantage considering wife is off to Nepal for a month while I stay home with the kids and pay her bills so the way I see it is she will owe me about 500 hours of uninterrupted training time! EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!

Crash: funny, my wife is more than happy to see me go - i'm pretty sure it's b/c of my award winning personality and not b/c she heard that death was a potential outcome for this event...

Bandito: Wait death is a potential outcome!! That is awesome, I may actually have the potential to stare death in the face and weep like a child, what could be more manly.

Roger: That the bandit never considered death an option until now is informative. It remains right up there at position numero uno in my list of likely outcomes.

stay tuned for more...

What does car free days mean?

Someone recently asked me what's the deal with the car free days on ur blog. A friend of mine shared with me this web-a-site: http://www.carfreedays.com/. The site has plenty-o literature to read, but the nutshell is if we try and reduce our carbon dependency we can work as individuals to help create a paradyme shift in what the collective "we" depend on for our transportation. At Car Free Days dot com you pledge how many days a month you will leave your vehicle parked and use alternative transportation - the minimum is (4) days. Since I have two kids, and know things always pop up, I pledged (5) car less days a month. So, if I don't drive for the day, I can count the bike miles I did in my running total. I ride almost everyday, however I also drive a bit during those days too - so I don't count my bike mileage on days I drive. My bike mileage comes from taking the kid to school, running errands, taking the other kid for a nap in the bike trailer, taking the dog for a run, etc.

It is quite liberating to evaluate your life in terms of putting a side something you "think" you depend on. I encourage anyone else remotely interested in healthier life alternatives to visit www.carfreedays.com.
